Step and Wall Flashing Repair on Shingle Roofs in Chicago Ridge, IL

Step and Wall Flashing Repair on Shingle Roofs in Chicago Ridge, IL

Where a shingle roof runs up against a sidewall, it is protected by step flashing: small L-shaped pieces of metal, one per shingle course, woven in so each piece laps over the one below. When a step is missing, rusted through, or was replaced with one long strip of caulk-covered metal, water gets behind the siding.

Chicago Ridge, IL Shingle Roof Repair helps homeowners in Chicago Ridge, IL find shingle roofing contractors for step and wall flashing repair. The work usually means:

• Removing the shingles along the wall line
• Pulling back siding or trim enough to reach the vertical leg of the flashing
• Installing new step flashing pieces, at least 4 inches up the wall and 4 inches onto the roof
• Adding a kickout flashing at the bottom so water dumps into the gutter, not into the wall
• Re-shingling and resealing the course edges

The kickout is the piece most often missing. Without it, every rain sends a stream down the face of the wall at the roof edge, and the rot shows up inside the wall long before anyone sees it outside.
